Last Summer Lunch 2004
Sultan Çoban „re-creates“lunch with her installation that took place in an outdoor kitchen in the summer of 2004. The sound is created from recordings of the environment where she grew up. The artist does not build this space exactly as it was but creates a cutout place that triggers a sense of being there.
„A room where some family members and I are having lunch. There are uncles, aunts, cousins, sisters-in-law, daughters-in-law, neighbors, and grandparents at the table. It is a hot summer day and this room is the outdoor kitchen. There are flies buzzing around everywhere, they are so annoying. The roasted vegetables are served with pita bread and watermelon. We sit on the floor. The small window is open, a light summer breeze blows through the opening. You can hear the neighbors, children playing, cows mooing, and dogs barking in the distance. Walking across the carpeted floor, watermelon seeds stick to the soles of your feet. There‘s no evidence of that moment.“
